Women activists demand passing of 33% women quota bill

New Delhi, 12 Feb 2014: Hundreds of women on Wednesday took part in a daylong demonstration seeking passage of the long-pending 33% Women’s Reservation Bill in the ongoing session of the Parliament. The bill has been waiting a debate in Lok Sabha for over three years now. The bill has already been passed in the Rajya Sabha.

The demonstration was held in heart of the national capital at Jantar Mantar – a couple of kilometres from the Parliament House. Later the participants took out a march to Parliament.

The demand for action came from various speakers such as Dr. Syeda Hameed, Member of the Planning Commission, Ms. Nandita Das, an award-winning Indian film actress, Dr. Prabha Thakur, Member of Parliament (LokSabha), Ms. Brinda Karat, Former Member of Parliament, Ms. Jagmati Sangwan, Ms. Shabnam Hashmi, Ms. Kamla Bhasin, Ms. AlbeenaShakil, Mr. Harsh Mander and others.

Speakers also pointed out that reservations for women in the panchayats and urban local bodies has facilitated the entry of millions of women across the spectrum into the public arena.
