By India Tomorrow News,
New Delhi, 05 May 2014: Azamgarh has been trending over social networking platform Twitter throughout the day on Monday. The reason is the controversial remark of BJP leader Amit Shah about the eastern historic district of Uttar Pradesh.

Addressing an election rally in Azamgarh today, Amit Shah reportedly branded Azamgarh as ‘haven of terrorists’. The remark led to former chief minister and BSP supremo Mayawati demanding the Election Commission to ban poll campaigning of Amit Shah.

Comments pro and against Amit Shah also flooded Twitter.

Columnist, author and former BJP leader and speech writer of LK Advani, Sudheendra Kulkarni strongly condemned Amit Shah’s comment.

He wrote ‏@SudheenKulkarni: “Calling Azamgarh a terrorist base is wrong, utterly wrong. Typecasting a place and its inhabitants in this manner is communal – condemnable”

“Now Azamgarh became the terror hub. AmitShah should be reminded of Sanghi hub – RSS headquarter in Nagpur,” was a comment ‏@IFFIDEL

Ashok Garekar commented: “As AzamGarh has become synonymous with Terrorism, its name will be changed to AmitGarh after 16th May, as tribute to hard work of Amit Shah.”

Some Twitter users, however, also came up in support of Amit Shah.

“Releasing terrorists from jail is ‘secular’ & asking for implementation of law in the terrorist hub is ‘communal’ wrote Umang Singh ‏@iUmangSingh.

Another wrote ‏@Chanakya_74: By equating terrorists from Azamgarh with Muslims, has the Congress scored a self-goal?
