Lucknow, Oct 15: In a big setback to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party or BJP, the student wing of Samajwadi Party – the party which was trounced by BJP in the state Assembly polls just six months back – has swept the students union elections at the prestigious Allahabad University.

The Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, student wing of SP, has won four of five posts including president and vice president. ABVP, associated with the BJP, could win just one seat of general secretary.

BJP had ousted the Samajwadi Party from the power in the state assembly elections early this year. BJP had won 325 seats in the 402-member Assembly – in the 2012 Assembly polls, it had won just 47 seats. And Samajwadi Party was reduced from 224 seats in the 2012 polls to just 54 seats in the 2017 polls. After the landslide victory, BJP leader Yogi Adityanath was made chief minister of the state.
