India Tomorrow
New Delhi, Jan 13— The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has lambasted the BJP-led central government over the Triple Talaq Bill and asked why the saffron party, despite repeated requests from Opposition parties, did not want to send the controversial bill to Select Committee of the Parliament for thorough discussion with all stakeholders of the issue.

In the wake of the strong and united opposition by most of non-BJP parties in the Rajya Sabha, the government could not table the bill in the Upper House which was passed by the Lok Sabha on Dec 28. Consequently, the central government on Thursday (Jan 10) approved a proposal to re-promulgate the ordinance making instant triple talaq a criminal offence. The government had passed ordinance in September last year and it was to be approved by the Parliament in this Winter Session as per rules.

Reacting over the approach of the BJP in regard with the instant Triple Talq issue, AIMBPL said on Friday: “The @BJP4India led government has no interest in Muslim women’s welfare. It is interested in imprisoning Muslim men and destroying Muslim families. TT bill would be a curse for the country if it had been passed.”

“Why @BJP4India never wanted to send the bill to the select committee? Was it afraid of something?” it asked.

“Triple Talaq bill was a big political stunt to direct public attention away from important matters that concern everyone,” it said and added: “India needs development, welfare for farmers, social justice, corruption-free politics not triple Talaq bill.”

The AIMPBL has also thanked Opposition leaders and their parties for not allowing the passage of the bill in the Rajya Sabha.

“We congratulate the opposition members in the parliament who rejected the barbaric Triple Talaq Bill,” said the board and thanked some MPs by tagging them on its Twitter handle.

“Thank you for raising your voice and rejecting the TT bill. @Ranjeet4India @ghulamnazad @MallikarjunINC @MPDharmendraYdv @JayGalla @asadowaisi It meant a lot to the Muslim community when you all said #NoTTBill.”

After being unable to pass the bill in the Rajya Sabha, the Union Cabinet on Thursday approved a proposal to re-promulgate the ordinance making instant triple talaq a criminal offence. The decision to re-promulgate the ordinance was taken a day after the conclusion of winter session of Parliament during which the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018, or triple talaq bill, could not be passed.

The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha but got stuck in in the Rajya Sabha, where the government lacks majority, since the opposition parties expressed reservations to some provisions of the bill.

The ordinance makes all declarations of instant triple talaq void and illegal and provides for up to three years’ imprisonment for invoking instant divorce by uttering talaq thrice in a single sitting.

The government is keen to get the bill passed and is expected to make another attempt for its passage during the short budget session of Parliament likely to begin on January 31.

On Saturday, President of India Ram Nath Kovind approved re-promulgation of the triple talaq ordinance.

In a Ministry of Law and Justice notification on Saturday, the government informed that President Kovind has promulgated the The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance, 2019.
