When NDA had not clear majority of presidential electorate, why didn’t Congress-led Opposition announce its own candidate much earlier?

IndiaTomorrow.net,
New Delhi, June 22: The Dalit ‘enticement’ has made big cracks in the non-BJP camp in last four days and the NDA candidate for President of India Ram Nath Kovind is said to be in comfortable position now to enter the Rashtrapati Bhawan next month.

Originally, NDA had only about 47.5 per cent share in the vote poll of the presidential election – 5.27 lakh in absolute numbers out of total 10.98 lakh votes, a bit short of the halfway mark of 5.49 lakh votes. But soon after it declared Bihar governor Ram Nath Kovind, a Dalit politician from Uttar Pradesh, as its presidential candidate, several parties from the non-BJP camp fell one by one from the rank and announced their support for the ‘Dalit’ candidate of NDA, giving the ruling alliance a very clear majority – it is said it has surpassed even 60% vote support. The latest one to fall is Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal-United of chief minister Nitish Kumar, which is seen as a big setback for the Opposition who is right now meeting in Delhi to discuss their strategy for the Presidential poll.

As reports say, there is strong likelihood that the Opposition would announce another Dalit leader and former Speaker of Lok Sabha Meira Kumar as their candidate.

Now the million-dollar question is: What would happen if Congress-led Opposition had made this announcement before the NDA’s announcement?

At least, NDA’s candidate would not win as smoothly as he would now.
