Three Die In Police Firing In Assam, Several Injured, Houses of Several Ministers and BJP MLAs Attacked, Vehicle of DGP also Attacked

GUWAHATI, DECEMBER 12—Three persons are reported to have died and several others injured in firing by police and security forces at different places in Guwahati and other parts of the state. Three of the injured are serious and admitted in Guwahati Medical College hospital.

While one of the dead in firing was identified as Dipanjal Das, the remaining two could not be identified till filing of this report.

Police and security personnel had to open fire to bring the situation under control as protesters against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill continued demonstrations and rallies in defiance of the curfew and warnings by the security personnel throughout the day on Thursday. Clashes between protesters and security personnel were going on at several places till late evening.

This is happening despite Guwahati, Dibrugarh and many other towns of Assam still continuing under curfew.

DGP’s Vehicle Attacked
Protesters also attacked the vehicle of state Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta. But DGP escaped unhurt.

Protesters also attacked the houses of several BJP MLAS and ministers including Prasanta Phukan, Ranjit Das(also state BJP president), Padma Hazarika, Ranjit Datta and Angoorlata Deka(she is also an Assami film actress).

Houses of Chief Minister, Ministers, MLAs Attacked
Two houses of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at Dibrugarh and another in Madhuli Jorhat were also attacked by protesters. Police had to open fire to disperse the mob.

People agitating against passing of the CAB also burnt several vehicles, including a police vehicle in Guwahati. A railway office in upmarket Chandmari in Guwahati was also burnt.

RSS Office Attacked
A crowd of protesters attacked the RSS office at Golaghat. But no one was reported to be injured in the attack.

Several BJP office-bearers are also reported to have resigned from the party owing to anger among the people against the party due to passage of CAB. Actor Jatin Bara, who is chairman of the Assamese Film Board, resigned today from his post. More than 100 office-bearers from different districts also quit the party.

Revolt In AGP On CAB Issue
Asom Gana Parishad’s(AGP) support for CAB have resulted a revolt zgainst AGP state president Atul Bara. AGP MLAs Vrindavan Goswami and Ramendra Narayan have resigned from party posts protesting against Atul Bara’s decision to support CAB in the Rajya Sabha.
