New Delhi, April 29: Scores of elderly retired teachers of Delhi University on Saturday held a pretest demonstration at the campus over non-payment of monthly pension despite the Delhi High Court order eight months ago.

On 24 Aug 2016, a two-judge bench of the Delhi High Court had directed the Delhi University to issue monthly pension under General Provident Fund (GPF) to some 300 teachers from around 72 colleges of the central university.

However, even after 8 months, the retired teachers have not got the amount.

Speaking to IndiaTomorrow.net, Dr. Anuradha Anand, ex-Principal, Janki Devi Memorial College, said it is like disowning the judgment of High Court.

“Despite the High Court’s order in favor of all retired teachers to give their pensions, the university and MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) both are not implementing it. It has been more than 8 months since the judgment came. So, we have filed a case of ‘Contempt of Court’ in the High Court in which the university and MHRD both are parties. The next hearing is on May 1,” she said.

These teachers had joined before 1986 and most of them opted to continue with cumulative provident fund (CPF), which is paid as lump sum at the time of retirement. But the university later reportedly granted them an opportunity to change their choice and shift to GPF. But the teachers claimed they never came to know about any such offer, and so in 2010, they moved the court to get the benefit of the GPF scheme.

Meanwhile, the university is learnt to have passed a resolution to file SLP in the Supreme Court against the High Court order.

“Very inhumane and insensitive. Many are having medical problems of heart, kidney, BP, cancer etc.,” said Dr. Anuradha Anand reacting over the university move.

The Delhi University Teachers’ Association had organized the Saturday’s protest meet.
