Protests in Rajasthan, Kolkata against hate-murder of labourer in Rajasamand

Jaipur/New Delhi, Dec 9: The horrific video and reports of the brutal murder of a labourer Mohammed Afrazul in Rajasthan’s Rajasamand district, triggered several protests in Rajasthan and Kolkata on Friday. Agitators demanded immediate resignation of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and stringent punishment to the culprits.

In Udaipur, Rajasthan Muslim Parishad (RMP) took out a massive protest rally while in Jaipur, youths along with members of several civil rights groups, held a protest against the killing.

Holding protest in Jaipur, protesters said in statement, “Brutal murder of Mohammed Afrazul, and sharing its video on social media by the killer shows that CM Vasundhara Raje has failed to control hate crime against Muslism in the state repeatedly. It proves how much lawlessness prevailed in the state. The central and state BJP governments have made the state a laboratory of Hindutva forces who are spreading venom against Muslims. CM Raje must resign and Prime Minister Narendra Modi must break silence.”

The joint statement was issued from Peoples’ Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Rajasthan, Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangatha (RMKSS), Rajasthan Nagrik Manch (RNM), Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch (DSMM), Jan Vichar Manch (JVM), Dr. Ambedkar Vichar Manch, Pink City Zari Handloom Work Mazdoor Union (PCZHWMU), Akhil Bhartiya Kisan Sabha (ABKS) Jamait Islami Hind, National Muslim Women Welfare Society (NMWWS) and National Alliance for People’s Movement (NAPM).

In a horrific incident, on Wednesday, Mohammed Afrazul, 48, a laborer from Malda in West Bengal was stabbed to death by a man named Shambunlal Raigar, aged around 35 in Rajasamand district. The video of the murder shoot by Raigar’s nephew went viral on social media. In the horrifying video of the murder, Shambunlal justifying his act and warning that those indulging in ‘love jihad’ will meet the same fate. Afrazul was also burnt after killing. Afrazul’s charred body was found by a passerby who informed the police. The Police arrested Raigar on Thursday and filed a case against him.

The video of the murder shoot by Raigar’s nephew went viral on social media, Shambunlal justifying his act and warning that those indulging in ‘love jihad’ will meet the same fate.

Besides, in Kolkata, the members of Trinmool Congress (TMC) also held a massive protest rally in Kolkata.

While in Delhi, students in Jawaharlal Nehru university campus, burnt efigy of BJP and RSS on Friday, accusing that the target killings of Muslims have become a normal affair in a particular atmosphere that has been created under Modi government.

Including this incident, total four Muslims have been killed in Rajasthan since April this year.

1 April: Haryana’s dairy farmer Pehlu Khan, 55 was brutally lynched by a mob of Gau Rakshaks (Co Vigilntes) in the Alwar district when he along with three others were returning after purchasing some cows and calves from a government-run fare in Jaipur.

16 June: Social activist Zafar Khan was allegedly beaten to death by municipality employees in Pratapgarh district, when he objected to them taking photos of women defecating in the open.

10 Nov: Haryan’s dairy farmer Umar Khan, 35, along with two of his aides were allegedly attacked by some 7-8 Gau Rakshaks armed with guns near Fahari village in Gobindgarh. They were transporting cows and calves in a pick-up truck for dairy farming from Mewat in Haryana to Bharatpur in the state.
