Protests held in Jaipur, Delhi against Nagaur killing of Dalits

Jaipur / New Delhi, 23 May 2015: With anger over the 14th May brutal attack on a Dalit family in Nagaur district of Rajasthan growing, several human rights and social activists Saturday held a protest demonstration outside the Rajasthan Bhawan here in the National Capital. At least three people of Meghwal Dalit community were killed and a dozen others wounded when some members of the Jat community attacked the house of Ratnaram Meghwal over a land dispute.

The Delhi protest demonstration was jointly organized by AIDWA, AIPWA, ANHAD, MOEMIN, NCDHR, PUCL and others. Those present included AC Michael, Former Member, Minorities Commission Delhi; Asha Kowtal, AIDMAM, Jagmati Sangwan, AIDWA; Kavita Krishana, AIPWA; Navaid Hamid- MOEMIN; ND Pancholi-PUCL; Paul Divakar-NCDHR; and Shabnam Hashmi-ANHAD.

They submitted a memorandum with the Resident Commissioner, Rajasthan Bhawan and demanded a CBI probe into the incident and a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to each family of deceased.

In the memorandum, they claimed that six dalit wounded women are being treated in Ajmer hospital. The women, says the memorandum, alleged that the attackers molested them; Some of them suffered multiple fractures in hands and legs; A 25-year-old woman wept in the hospital speaking about how the attackers tore off her blouse and tried to strip her on the disputed land; She got 15 stitches on her head.

“It is understood that they tried to rape and abused Dalit women, tried to remove ‘ghaghra’ (skirt) and tried to thrust a stick inside. They even pulled up them by their hairs for about 50 metres, tore off clothes and hit their legs with iron-rods,” the human rights activists said.

A protest demonstration against the killings was held in Jaipur on Thursday. It was organized by the Rajasthan unit of Forum For Democracy and Communal Amity (FDCA) and other social organizations including Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. Jamaat’s Secretary General Mohammad Salim Engineer, Rajasthan Welfare Party president Er. Rashid Hussain and others addressed the protestors.

People’s Union For Civil Liberties (PUCL) has blamed police for the incident and expressed surprise at the indifferent attitude of administration and politicians. “We are surprised that even after such a serious crime, neither administrative nor political leadership like Home Secretary or DIG or chief minister or home minister have visited the place.

Some members of Jat community allegedly attacked Ratnaram Meghwal of Meghwal dalit community. Three people were reportedly killed in the incident and 12 others including men and women were wounded.

A 5-member representative team that included Rajasthan president of Ambedkarite Party of India Tek Chand Rahul, Rajasthan president of Welfare Party of India Er. Rashid Hussain and state secretary of FDCA Dr. M iqbal Siddiqui visited Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Ajmer where the injured are being treated and talked to the victims and their family members.

“The attack on Meghwal family was carried out in a planned way,” said the team in a statement adding that the dispute related to land. The team also demanded a CBI probe into the whole incident.
