New Delhi, July 24: People staged a protest demonstration outside the Delhi office of Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal United on Sunday against the alleged brutality by Bihar Police with renowned Shia cleric Maulana Mohammad Kazim Shabib, his family members and supporters in Muzaffarpur district of the state earlier this week. The protesters raised slogans against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Protesting against the attack on Maulana Shabib, who is Imam of Shia Jama Masjid in Muzaffarpur, Maulana Murad Raza and Maulana Mohsin Taqvi from Delhi Shia Jama Masjid said that Maulana Shabib has been falsely framed under sedition charges. They demanded withdrawal of the cases filed against Maulana Shabib and action against the guilty officials from police and district administration.

Maulana Murad Raza said, “The lands of Shia Waqf board in Muzaffarpur have been encroached due to corrupt members of the board and land mafias. Despite knowing this, Nitish Kumar is not taking action against them.”

“The Police did not spare even children and beat them up badly. The hand of Maulana was fractured. Yet the Police arrested him. Why did the police beat up women and children after barging into his home? Why did they desecrate the religious books?” Raza asked.

According to protesters, Maulana Shabib has been opposing Taqi Khan Waqf board members and land mafias who have sold out the waqf lands for a long time. They alleged that the administration took action against Maulana on the direction of waqf board members.

“Maulana Shabib has been leading a campaign against the corruption in Shia Waqf board of Bihar as it has been swindling Board’s properties with the help of local administration and land mafia. The board members want to make Shabib silent as he wants dissolution of the Board and probe into irregularities,” a demonstrator Syed Hassan Kazim said.

On July 22, according to media reports, after Friday prayers a clash erupted between supporters of Maulana Kazim Shabib and supporters of Waqf board members in Kamra locality. Maulana Shabib along with his supporters allegedly tried to lock the shops on the waqf land but the Bihar police stopped them. Police personnel reportedly thrashed and beat up Maulana Shabib, his family members including his wife, children and supporters. The library of Moulana Shabib inside his house having religious books was also vandalised.

In the assault, Maulana got fractures in his left hand and some of his family members and supporters were badly injured. In all, 28 persons were arrested and 14 cases were filed against Maulana Shabib. He along with five are admitted in Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) Muzaffarpur and police have issued arrest warrant against him.
