New Delhi, 19 Nov 2014: The Press Council of India today set up a four-member fact-finding committee to make a thorough probe into the Tuesday attack by Haryana Police on media persons who were covering the confrontation between the police and controversial godman Rampal’s supporters at his Satlok Ashram in Hisar of Haryana.

“Having considered the reports about the attack yesterday on media persons by the police in Hisar, Haryana, in which several media persons were badly beaten up, their cameras, and other equipment broken, I am of the prima-facie opinion that this is serious violation of the fundamental freedom guaranteed to the media by Article 19(1) (a) of the Constitution,” said Justice Markandey Katju, Chairman of Press Council in his order.

Over two dozen media persons, many of them from TV channels including NDTV, Times Now and Aaj Tak, were beaten by the police outside the ashram.
