Diphu (Assam), 10 April 2015: Several people, including policemen, were injured in Assam on Friday when a group of people clashed with security forces while protesting over the alleged failure of the police to act against army men accused of rape.
The incident took place in Karbi Anglong district’s Dokmoka village after a group of army personnel allegedly raped a woman and molested two others, including a teenaged girl, on Monday.
A victim told police that a team of eight army personnel took a girl to the jungle at Khorsim Athor village.
“Seeing that the army had taken the teenaged girl towards the jungle, two other women followed them and opposed the army personnel’s action,” police said while quoting the victims.
“The army personnel later allegedly raped one of them and molested the other two,” police said.
Villagers on Wednesday lodged an FIR with the police in Dokmoka and produced before them the three victims, who also recorded their statements.
A large number of people gathered in front of an army camp at Dokmoka and shouted slogans against the army, demanding action against those guilty.
The crowed later got agitated and pelted stones at the army camp, forcing the police to carry out a baton charge.
“Some people received minor injuries during the baton charge. Our police personnel have also been injured during the attack by the mob. The situation is under control now,” said Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police Mugdha Jyoti Mahanta.
“We have sent the three women for medical examination and registered a case. We have also constituted a special investigation team to look into the matter,” said Mahanta.
“We have also sent some samples for forensic test, which will confirm the rape. We are now waiting for the medical report as well as for the forensic test report.”
He said: “We have contacted army’s top brass and intimated about the happening. They have assured all possible help to us during the investigation.”
Meanwhile, an army spokesman said they have already instituted an internal probe into the matter and action will be taken against anyone, if found guilty.
