New Delhi, July 25: Rubbishing social media rumours about seat cut in its free coaching for civil services aspirants, Jamia Millia Islamia on Tuesday cleared that it has not cut any seat for the 2018 program. Talking to IndiaTomorrow.net, university official said that the number of total seats (200) remains same every year but since many aspirants are unaware of the “dynamic nature” of the free coaching program that accommodates good old students, they are in confusion.

“There is no reduction in the seats. This free coaching program is dynamic in nature. This is not the traditional BA or MA programs which have a fix number of seats for new entrants. The case is that there are 75 old candidates who could not clear either the main exam or interview of Civil Services exam this year but they all had cleared Prelims,” Jamia media coordinator, Prof. Saima Sayeed said while speaking to IndiaTomrrow.net. That’s why the university sought applications only for 125 seats.

No seat cut, it’s just rumour

“The university has spent so much energy, time, free residence and food on these candidates. If university invests one more year on them, they will certainly crack the exam. We can’t leave them midway. So, a false story is going on that we have reduced the seats,” she added.

Further clarifying she said: “Last year, we had notified 150 seats as there were 50 old students who continued with the new candidates. This has been continuing since the beginning of this residential coaching.”

When told that the confusion among some candidates is being spread as it has not been mentioned in the latest notification for 2018 coaching program, she said, “University is not under any obligation to notify it because it is a free coaching and not like any common course. All the details are not given in the notification.”

Jamia Millia is among a few universities in the country that provides free residential coaching to minorities, SC, ST and women candidates for preparation of CS exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

There are total 200 seats available for each year. Candidates are selected through an entrance test and an interview process. Besides free coaching, all candidates are also provided accommodation and food by the university.

A monthly scholarship of Rs 2000/- is also available for the upper 20% students on merit cum means basis.

In its notice, the university has notified total 125 seats for 2018 coaching program as old 75 students are also being accommodated for the new year program.

Apprehension of Aspirants

But some aspirants, not aware of the nature of the program, think that the varsity has been reducing the seats every year.

Mustafa Suhail, an aspirant pursuing MA (Social Exclusion) from the university said, “Free coaching is very important for us as candidates like me come from low economic background and can’t afford the private coaching. Seats are reducing but the applicants are increasing year by year. Every year Jamia is reducing seats for candidates. This year university has reduced the seats to 125 from 150 of previous year. It has increased the competition for us as already there are very few such good free coaching centres.”

“Even the breakup of the seats for boys and girls is not clear in the notification,” he added.

Some students said new candidates should get more chance or at least equal chance.

“Fresher should get more chance. If the university wants to accommodate the old candidates that is fine but the seats of new candidates should not have been cut. The old students can easily crack the exam; they don’t need coaching essentially as their foundations were sound,” another aspirant, also a Jamia Alumni said.

“I think 200 seats should be only for fresher candidates,” he said.

Jamia’s Success Record

The final results of All India Civil Services examination 2016, announced in June this year, brought big smiles for Jamia as 29 of its candidates got success. This is the highest count since the coaching was started by university’s Residential Coaching Academy in 2012.
