NHRC Notice to Indian Railways over Junaid’s Lynching in Train

New Delhi, July 27: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Indian Railways and Haryana Government in the lynching of teenager Junaid Khan in a train one month ago. The NHRC has sought report within four weeks.

The Commission has taken the action on a plea filed by political activist Shehzad Poonawalla on June 27. Shehzad had appealed to NHRC seeking report from all concerned authorities.

“The petitioner has alleged killing of a minority community youth travelling in a train and inaction by state authorities. Let a notice be issued to the Chairman, Railway Board, Government of India, Rail Bhavan, New Delhi, Chief Secretary, Government of Haryana and DGP, Haryana, calling for report within four weeks,” the commission said.


Junaid Khan, 16, was beaten and then stabbed to death by a group of men in the Delhi-Mathura EMU local train near Faridabad railway station in Haryana on 22nd June. He was returning home in Ballabhgarh along with his two brothers after Eid shopping in Delhi. His brothers Hashim Khan (19) and Shakir Khan (22) were also got severe injuries in the assault. Attackers allegedly also passed communal comments by calling them “Beef eaters” and “anti-national”.

Total five people have been arrested by the police in the case.
