New Delhi, June 11: In the wake of alleged paper leak of the National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Test (NEET) 2017, students fear the incident has dimmed chances for admission in good medical colleges. Many of them began a protest sit-in at Jantar Mantar, near the Parliament House here on Friday and demanded the central government to order to re-conduct of the examination and also constitute a CBI enquiry into the matter.

In a three-page letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister or HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, students have underlined irregularities in the NEET examination.

The letter reads: “The NEET exam marred with controversies since the year it was introduced (2013) as a single entrance examination for the medical studies in the country. This year was no exception……….The latest reports underline the fact that the entire process has been tainted and sanctity of NEET has been breached. If such irregularities continue to prevail in such prestigious examination, it will generate a sense of frustration among genuine students, with aversion to the concept of entrance examination.”

Pawan Chaudhry while protesting along with several students at Jantar Mantar here said: “Besides Delhi, students have been protesting at several places since 10th May when the news of NEET paper leak came out. We want that the exam should be re-conducted in fair manner, so that every candidate gets fair chance for admission and not those who are unable.”

The NEET for admissions to Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programmes was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on May 7. From the very next day reports came that the paper was leaked in different states.

As per reports, a total of 11, 38,890 students registered for the examination including Indian and Foreign nationals. This year the exam was conducted in 10 languages including vernacular languages besides English and Hindi.

Ghulam Nabi from Lucknow also joined the protest. He said: “We do hard work to qualify the exam but those who are not able to get admission get admission due to this corruption. Not just our future is in danger, India’s future is also in danger. CBI enquiry should be constituted in this case.”

“For last three years we have been appearing in medical entrance examination and all the three consecutive years paper was leaked. In the two previous years, exam was re-conducted, so what is the problem for the government this year? Why isn’t the govt directing CBSE to re-conduct it?” he asked.

On May 24, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court had put a stay on the NEET 2017 results as a petition sought cancellation of NEET 2017. The court had also directed the MCI (Medical Council of India), Health Ministry and the CBSE to file counter affidavits.

On Saturday, 10th June, the CBSE moved the Supreme Court seeking an immediate stay on the Madras HC’s order. Now the matter that concerns the fate of lakhs of aspirants will be heard by the apex court on Monday, June 12.
