New Delhi, June 3: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an FIR in the case of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmad who has been untraced since he disappeared seven months ago after an alleged altercation with ABVP members at the university hostel. The CBI has filed a case of “kidnapping with intent to secretly and wrongfully confine” him.

On 16th of May, observing no trace of Najeeb even after a long seven months investigation, the Delhi High Court had rebuked the Delhi Police for wasting time and transferred the case to CBI for speedy probe. Court’s order came on the plea of Najeeb’s mother Fatima Nafees, demanding CBI probe as Delhi Police failed to trace him.

A bench of Justices G S Sistani and Rekha Palli had also directed the CBI that the investigation has to be monitored by an officer not less than the rank of DIG and posted the matter for hearing on July 17.

Najeeb, 27, a first year M.Sc.(Biotechnology) student, went missing from his JNU hostel – Mahi Mandavi room number 106 on October 15 last year, day after an alleged scuffle with members of RSS’ student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Najeeb’s mysterious disappearance triggered massive protests by students, forcing the police to launch speedy investigation. The Delhi police has faced severe criticism from the High Court judges for failing to trace Najeeb.

Earlier, the police had also announced reward for information that could help locate Najeeb. It first announced a reward of Rs 50,000, which was then increased to Rs 1 lakh, then Rs 2 lakh and subsequently to Rs 10 lakh.

In October last year, after direction from Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh the Delhi Police had set up a Special Investigating Team (SIT) to trace Ahmed and transferred the case to the Crime Branch. However, Najeeb has remained untraceable till today.
