New Delhi, April 4: Indian Muslims consider that more than 70% Hindu countrymen are highly patriotic – almost the same figure is given by Hindus about themselves. However, when Hindus are asked about Muslims’ patriotism, they say that less than 15% Muslims are highly patriotic.

The study conducted by the Lokniti programme of CSDS (Centre for the Study of Developing Societies) and Azim Premji University in Gujarat, Haryana, Odisha and Karnataka in Nov-Dec 2016 reveals: Muslims consider 72% Hindus to be highly patriotic. Hindus consider 73% Hindus to be highly patriotic. But Hindus consider only 13% Muslims to be highly patriotic. However, Muslims consider 77% Muslims to be highly patriotic.

The study will continue for three years. A brief of the first report in series was published by The Indian Express today. The three-year study is titled Society and Politics Between Elections. The study also captures personal relationships, community interactions and political engagement.

As per the survey done through face-to-face interviews with 7,770 respondents in 21 Assembly constituencies in the four states, Hindus are not alone to consider fewer Muslims to be highly patriotic. Sikhs also consider just 11% Muslims to be highly patriotic. However, Christians see 26% Muslims to be highly patriotic.

Similarly, Sikhs consider only 12% Christians to be highly patriotic but Christians consider 46% Sikhs to be highly patriotic.

Except Christians, all three communities have considered themselves to be more highly patriotic than others. Christians consider more Hindus to be highly patriotic than Christians themselves.

While Hindus, Muslims and Christians have considered 72-73% Hindus to be highly patriotic, Sikhs see only 66% Hindus as such.
