New Delhi, Jan 31: The family members of missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed including his mother and dozens of students held a demonstration outside the Delhi Police headquarters here on Monday as a mark of protest against an alleged raid by police at the houses of Najeeb’s grandfather and other relatives in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district earlier this week.

As more than 100 days passed since Najeeb’s mysterious disappearance from his hostel room at JNU, day after scuffle with some members of a Hindu-right student group, Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) has written to President Pranab Mukherjee seeking his intervention for safe recovery of Najeeb and justice with his family.

The protesters were angry at the alleged police raid at Najeeb’s house while, they alleged, those who assaulted him in the night of 14 Oct 2016 at JNU hostel, have not even been interrogated and they are scot-free.

Najeeb’s family alleged that around 40 policemen, some of them from Delhi Police, came up in four vehicle in the wee hours of this past Saturday and barged into their house in Badaun. The police personnel made a video recording of the house and took IMEI no of mobile phones.

Days after his disappearance, the Delhi Police set up an SIT to probe the scuffle and find out Najeeb. The Delhi Police have also announced an award of Rs 5 lakh for information about Najeeb.

Students protest outside Delhi Police headquarters on 30 Jan 2017 for missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed.

On the other hand, Najeeb’s family has filed a habeas corpus in the Delhi High Court and made nine students and members of ABVP accused.

In the last hearing on 23 Jan, the Delhi Police told the high court that nine students accused of assaulting Najeeb are not cooperating with the police in the probe.

Meanwhile, SIO, the largest Muslim student group in the country, has written a letter to President of India.

“More than 100 days has been completed on disappearance of Najeeb, a young student of JNU campus, when students and concerned citizens ask questions to government, police and JNU administration there is no response from the either side of the authorities,” wrote Syed Azharuddin, National Secretary of SIO, in his letter to the President.

“SIO of India requests the custodian of our constitution, the President of India – Mr Pranab Mukherjee, to intervene and order the authorities to normalize the situation. We demand to bring back Najeeb Ahmed, missing student of JNU immediately and punish the people who assaulted him,” he said.

He also expressed concern on rise in intolerance and violence in the society.

“There is also a change in the pattern of violence which is a threat to democracy. The assaulters come in the form of mobs – lynch innocents to death, troll activists, abuse on social media, threaten students and youth in case of dissent, witch-hunt minorities, force common people to adopt one ideology, force people to chant their slogans, etc,” he alleged.
