Magsaysay Award Winner Sandeep Pandey, His Colleagues Denied Entry Into Srinagar

NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 5 – Ramon Magsaysay Award winner Sandeep Pandey and three other social activists were denied entry into Srinagar and were forcibly sent back from Srinagar International airport on Friday.

They were detained at Srinagar airport on Friday morning and sent back by the next flight.

Pandey was accompanied by his human rights activist friends Praful Samantra of Lok Shakti Abhiyan, who is also associated with National Alliance of Peoples Movement(NAPM) and Lohia Academy, Bhubaneshwar, Faisal Khan of Socialist Party(India) and national convener of Khudai Khitmatgar, and Javed Mallik, also from Khudai Khitmatgar.

Pandey and his team were on a mission to have a peaceful interaction with the local people in Srinagar. “But they were served orders not to venture out of the airport and bundled back to New Delhi by the next available flight, leaving them totally dejected and humiliated’’, said Pannalal Surana, national president of Socialist Party(India).

The order served by Budgam district magistrate on Sandeep Pandey said,’ “Credible inputs from various agencies say that Mr Sandeep Pandey, social activist, intends to organize protests against recent Parliamentary proceedings vis-a-vis changes made in the legislations/legal framework with regards to Jammu & Kashmir.

“Whereas such may have adverse effect on law and order situation in the district which so far remained by and large peaceful.

“By virtue of Sec 144 CrPC imposes restrictions on movement of Mr Sandeep Pandeep social activist beyond the arrival lounge of Srinagar International airport till futher orders so as to maintain peace and tranquility in the district.’’
