Madhya Pradesh, not UP, is the capital of rapes: Govt. Report

New Delhi, 22 July 2014: Incidents like Badaun and 16 Dec. gang-rapes grabbed national and international headlines bringing disrepute to Uttar Pradesh and Delhi respectively, but the government data shows Madhya Pradesh has continuously topped all states in rapes since 2001.

In the year 2013 also, Madhya Pradesh was on top in rape incidents. The year recorded 33707 rape cases in the country. With 4335 cases, Madhya Pradesh was at No. 1 followed by Rajasthan (3285) and Maharashtra (3063). With 3050 rape cases, Uttar Pradesh was at No. 4 in the country in 2013 followed by Assam (1937).

According to Crime in India 2013 report prepared by National Crime Record Bureau, Madhya Pradesh ruled by Bhartiya Janata Party for last 10 years, has recorded 52 percent increase in rape cases compared to 2001.

During the year 2013 some 33707 rape cases were reported from across the country, which is an increase of 39.25 percent compared to year 2001. With 4335 rape cases in 2013, Madhya Pradesh has registered an increase of 52 percent compared to 2001 when it had recorded 2851 rape cases.

Compared to 2012 also, Madhya Pradesh has witnessed an increase of 26.57 percent in rape cases in 2013.

Ratio of rape in MP is more than double the population ratio of women in the state.

MP has about 3.57 crore women population (Census 2011) which is 6 percent of total women population of the country but it recorded 12.86 percent of total rape cases reported in the country in 2013.

Other crimes against women like assault with intent to outrage their modesty (under section 354 of Indian Penal Code) also were high in the state. Compared to 2001 there are 21 percent and compared to 2012
some 23 percent more such cases were reported in MP in 2013. In 2001 some 7063 cases were reported under this section which went up to 8252 in 2013.
