Killing of Pahlu Khan outrages people against violent cow vigilantism

On 1st April, a group of self-styled cow vigilantes attacked dairy farmer Pehlu Khan and four other Muslim dairy farmers in Behror area of Alwar district in Rajasthan. While Khan succumbed to injuries in hospital, another’s condition is serious.

New Delhi / Jaipur, April 11: People from Jaipur to Delhi are outraged against the brutal killing of dairy farmer Pahlu Khan by a gang of cow vigilantes (Gau Rakshaks) in Alwar district of Rajasthan last week. From Jaipur to Delhi, people have come out denouncing violent cow vigilantism and have asked the government to take strict action against the culprits immediately.

In Jaipur, people held a protest demonstration and candle light vigil Monday evening.

Sawai Singh, President of Nasha Mukt Bharat Samiti, termed as shameful the attempt of Rajasthan Home minister Gulab Chand Kataria to defend the cow vigilantes.

“Statement of Rajasthan Home Minister is very shameful. How can he defend attackers,” Singh asked.

“People close to govt. are doing hooliganism. Police should execute their constitutional duty. People of Rajasthan will not tolerate such violence. These killers should be arrested. Stern action should be taken against them,” he demanded while standing in the vigil along with other residents of Jaipur.

On 1st April, a group of self-styled cow vigilantes attacked Haryana’s dairy farmer Pehlu Khan and four other Muslim dairy farmers in Behror area of Alwar district when they were returning after purchasing some cows and calves from a government-run fare in Jaipur. They were brutally beaten up by the mob.

They had valid papers from the Municipal authorities. Pahlu Khan, hailing from Haryana, later succumbed to injuries in hospital.

In Delhi, two protests were held on Monday.

Some peace activists gathered at Raj Ghat, the mausoleum of Mahatma Gandhi, in Delhi. They held a candle vigil and denounced violence by Gau Rakshaks across the country.

Students of Jamia Millia Islamia also held a protest demonstration and candle light vigil.

“These cow vigilantes have created fear and terror in the country. Like Pehlu Khan, anyone can be targeted tomorrow,” a student said.

Another protesting student said,”BJP is maligning Muslims in the name of cow. This is a conspiracy against Muslims.”
