New Delhi, Oct 22: As JNU student Najeeb Ahmed remained traceless on 7th day of his mysterious disappearance from the university hostel, the Students Union leaders Friday evening went to the Union Home Ministry and submitted a three-point memorandum. They sought Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s intervention to ensure Najeeb’s safe recovery.

Earlier in the day, the JNU Students Union had called a protest march towards the Home Ministry. But for security reasons, their route was diverted and they were asked to hold their demonstration at Jantar Mantar. However, when around 150 students of JNU tried to proceed towards the Home Ministry from Jantar Mantar, they were detained by the Delhi Police at Parliament Street police station for a few hours. All of them were let off in the evening.

The JNUSU delegation that visited the Home Ministry had president Mohit Kumar Pandey, vice president Amal PP and general secretary Satarupa Chakraborty. They met Rakesh Mittal, Director, Ministry of Home Affairs.

Emerging from the meeting, JNUSU president Mohit Pandey talked to IndiaTomorrow.net

“We submitted a memorandum and put three demands – first, to constitute a high-level team to locate Najeeb and make a proper communication channel with us; second, to take strict action on the FIR filed by JNUSU against the students who were involved in assaulting Najeeb; and third, to instruct JNU Administration to play a transparent role in this case,” said Pandey.

“We are writing to you in the context demanding your intervention to address the situation with the seriousness it deserves. A Human life is at stake and all efforts have to be to ensure justice for Najeeb Ahmad,” JNUSU memorandum to Home Minister reads.

Najeeb Ahmad, a M.Sc. first year student of JNU, went missing on 15th October, a day after an alleged scuffle with some members of ABVP who had entered his room no. 106 for hostel election campaign at Mahi-Mandvi hostel. Eyewitness and some residents of same hostels also alleged that Najeeb was brutally assaulted and threatened to kill by a mob of 15-20 ABVP activists in the presence of warden in his office on the same Friday night of the incident.

An FIR was filed at Vasant Kunj Police station on the complaint of Najeeb’s family on Sunday. His mother and other family members also met the varsity administration urging them to file another formal complaint with the police so the assaulters can also be enquired. “But administration refused to file any other complaint to the police saying that an FIR had already been registered in the case and we are not the eyewitness,” Sadaf, sister of Najeeb said.

Protesting over the disappearance and alleged pathetic attitude of varsity administration in this case, students have been boycotting classes and holding protest at the campus since Monday. They also held a march from the university to Vasant Kunj police station on Monday night, where they filed another complaint mentioning names of nine ABVP members as accused.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday asked Delhi police commissioner to set up a Special Investigation Team to investigate the case. Earlier, Delhi police had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information about the whereabouts of Najeeb.

Meanwhile, students of some other universities are also holding protest demonstration over the disappearance of Najeeb Ahmed. Students of Delhi University and Aligarh Muslim University held a protest on Friday.
