Jamia Protest: Police Files FIR against 3 Students, 4 Local Politicians; 10 Others Sent to Jail

NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 18— In connection with the violent protest of Sunday in Jamia Nagar area of Delhi, the local police has arrested 10 persons and sent them to 14-day judicial remand – none of them is student. However, in another FIR, the police have reportedly named some students of Jamia Millia Islamia and some local politicians.

An official at the Jamia Nagar Police Station confirmed that out of 10 accused sent to jail on Tuesday, 6 were named in FIR at this police station while rest 4 at the New Friends Colony Police Station.

Besides the 10, at least three students and four local politicians have been named in another FIR. On the basis of a copy of FIR, NDTV has reported that three students including one related to Aam Aadmi Party’s youth wing has been named in the FIR. Four local politicians made accused include former Congress party MLA of the area Asif Mohammad Khan.

When contacted regarding the FIR in which students and politicians have been named, the Jamia Nagar Police Station police officer said he has no information about any such FIR at his police station.

Several attempts to contact former MLA Asif Khan failed.

On Sunday, the protest by students of Jamia Millia and local residents against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act turned violent as several buses and two-wheelers were set afire. Following the incident, a large number of policemen and CRPF personnel resorted to lathi-charge and teargas to disperse the crowd. They barged into the hostels and library of the university and assaulted students. The police also detained around 50 students who were released in the wee hours of Monday. Many of them were injured and sent to hospitals for treatment.

On Tuesday, it emerged that at least three persons, including two students of Jamia, had sustained bullet injuries. One was treated at the local Holy Family hospital and two others at Safdarjang Hospital. The Police have denied they fired bullets. They used only lathi-charge and teargas shells.
