New Delhi, 01 Sept 2015: To mark the United Nations World Day against Nuclear Tests, to honour the UN Resolution No.64/35 and commemorate the closing of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan, Jamia Millia Islamia university observed a “minute of silence” on August 29, 2015 at its camps in New Delhi, India.

Hostel wardens, staff, residents and volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS) assembled on the campus to observe the “minute of silence” in the memory of the victims of the nuclear tests.

In December 2009, the UN General Assembly declared 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests by unanimously adopting resolution 64/35. The resolution calls for increasing awareness and education “about the effects of nuclear-weapon-test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.”
