New Delhi, Dec 8: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, India’s one of the largest socio-religious Muslim organizations, has condemned the murder of police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh “in a premeditated attack” by a violent mob in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. Jamaat has demanded a judicial probe into the mob violence that erupted over alleged cow slaughter and also into the ghastly murder of the police officer. Jamaat has also demanded adequate compensation for Singh’s family.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Jamaat’s Acting President Nusrat Ali and Secretary General Mohammad Salim Engineer expressed deep concern over the violence in the Uttar Pradesh town on Monday (Dec 3).

“The cold blooded murder of a police officer by an unruly mob, in broad daylight and which was also filmed by the culprits shows the extent of breakdown of law and order in Uttar Pradesh,” Jamaat said in a statement.

Media reports say Singh was an upright officer. He was the first investigating officer in the 2015 lynching case of Mohammed Akhlaq in Dadri of Uttar Pradesh and was instrumental in the arrests of the accused.

“These anti-social elements who murdered the SHO (Subodh Kumar Singh) know that they have the backing of their political masters and will come out on bail sooner or later. The entire blame lies on the shoulders of those who have been peddling the politics of hate, following a divisive agenda and trying to demonize and intimidate the minorities and Dalits using fascist methodologies,” said Jamaat.

For the Monday violence and murder of the police officer, the local police have registered an FIR against dozens of people who were part of the mob and some of them have been arrested. However, the main accused, who is said to be from a saffron outfit, is still at large.

A civilian was also killed with gunshots during the violence. Police is probing the case.

On the other hand, the Police have registered an FIR in connection with the alleged cow slaughter also and half a dozen people have been arrested. Among the seven named accused for the alleged cow slaughter, there were reportedly two minors also. After media outcry, their names were dropped from the FIR.

Jamaat has demanded arrest of all accused of the violence and murder of the police officer.

“Many of those accused by the police in the murder of SHO Singh are still at large and have not come in the police dragnet. Jamaat demands that they must be arrested immediately to face trial and conviction. Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has always cautioned fellow citizens against these fascist and anti-social elements and it is time for the people of India to reject these forces both at the social and political level. Judicial enquiry, adequate compensation to the victim’s family is a sine qua non but a real tribute to the SHO’s ultimate sacrifice would be to shun the path of hate and violence and adopt the way of love and compassion,” said Jamaat.

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced to give Rs 40 lakh to Singh’s family and Rs 10 lakh to his parents.

Jamaat leaders also expressed their views on the Babri Masjid issue. They reiterated the resolve to continue the “peaceful and legal struggle for restoration and reconstruction of the Babri Masjid.”

This 6th December was the 26th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition. After passage of even a quarter century, the accused are still walking free.

“The Liberhan Commission presented its report in June 2009 after a period of 17 years but the report has not yet been implemented so far,” it said.

Jamaat condemned communal polarization over the issue even when the title suit is pending in the Supreme Court. It appreciated the peace-loving Hindus and Muslims for failing the recent communal gathering over the issue in Ayodhya.

Jamaat opposed the demand of saffron groups including RSS for an ordinance for construction of temple on the Babri site.

“Some are gathering mobs in huge numbers and inciting and provoking them to carry out some activities in the name of Ram Mandir that are in total contravention and violation of the judiciary. Some affiliated outfits of the RSS are pressurizing the government to acquire the land by issuing an ordinance, which would be against all democratic norms and very damaging to our secular polity,” said Jamaat.

“Jamaat appreciates our fellow countrymen for not succumbing to exploitation of their religious sentiments by certain forces who wish to misuse religion for their political benefit. We hope that the people of this country continue on this path of peace and harmony and do not give any response to calls for violence and breaking the law over matters related to faith and creed…the Muslim community also merits appreciation for exhibiting calmness in the face of provocation and not giving kneejerk reaction to the extremely fragile situation that prevailed at Ayodhya in the last few days,” it said.

Jamaat ruled out any out-of-court settlement over the issue and said it will wait and accept whatever verdict the apex court delivers in the title suit.

When asked if Jamaat wants early verdict in the case by the top court, Jamaat’s Acting President Nusrat Ali said: “Let the court do its job. We wish early verdict but we cannot dictate the court.”
