New Delhi, Sep 24: India’s Opposition on Sunday cornered BJP over the police lathi-charge on protesting girl students at Banaras Hindu University in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh. In the lathi-charge on Saturday night, several girl students were reportedly injured.
Reacting over the incident, Opposition leaders asked the BJP, which is ruling both at the centre and in Uttar Pradesh besides dozen other states, if the BHU violence was the way BJP wants to implement it pet slogan ‘Beti Bachao – Beti Padhao’. Since Thursday, the girls were protesting against an incident of molestation at the campus and demanding enhancement of security measures, but according to media reports, even after 48 hours of the protest, the university administration did not talk to the protesting girls or make any assurance over their demands.
Commenting on the incident, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi tweeted: (The incident is) BJP version of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao in BHU.
CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said: “Modi said “Beti Bachao”. We didn’t know it meant saving women students from the brutality of his govts. This is in his own LS constituency.”
Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad said: “सुरक्षा प्राप्त करने के लिए अडिग मातास्वरूप प्रिय बेटियों पर पुरुष पुलिसकर्मियों द्वारा आधी रात में लाठीचार्ज कराना कहाँ का पराक्रम है साहब?”
Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party commented: “BHU से प्रदर्शनकारी छात्राओं को हटाने के लिए पुलिस बल प्रयोग किया गया, PM द्वारा ‘बेटी बचाओ’ का नारा ऐसे सार्थक किया जा रहा है ! #शर्मनाक।”
Samajwadi Party chief and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh commented: “नारी रक्षा व गरिमा की बात करने वालों ने BHU में छात्राओं व प्रेस पर लाठी चार्ज कर साबित कर दिया है कि अब आवाज़ उठाने की आज़ादी भी छिन गयी है”
