Irom Sharmila files nomination for Manipur assembly elections

New Delhi, Feb 17:Manipur-based civil rights activist Irom Sharmila on Friday filed nomination papers from Thoubal Assembly seat for Manipur assembly elections.

Sharmila has filed nomination as a candidate of her own party – Peoples’ Resurgence & Justice Alliance (PRJA). To file the nomination she covered a distance of about 20 kms from Imphal on her bicycle.

Popularly known as Iron Lady, Sharmila will be the main contestant against Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Okram Ibobi in Manipur assembly polls.

Anti-AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) crusader Sharmila ended her 16-year-long hunger strike in August last year and recently launched her own party PRJA.

Elections for the 60-seat Manipur Assembly will be held in two phases – one on 4th March (for 38 seats) and second on 8th March (for 22 seats). Votes will be counted on 11th March.
