Invincibility’ convincingly broken

Proof of the three-word headline has just been provided by a three-word party. Since the landslide victory in the General Elections last year, the two most powerful persons in the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party – Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah – had led their party to big victory in full Assembly polls in four states – Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir. No wonder, the duo and their strategy began to be seen – or they saw themselves – as invincible. But the Delhi Assembly results this week have shattered their ‘invincible’ image.

BJP had won 32 out of 70 Assembly seats in Delhi in the Dec 2013 polls. But this time, a young political outfit and its young leadership have restricted the saffron party to three seats. Aam Aadmi Party has won the rest 67 seats with a convincing mark. Congress has made history with zero seat in the assembly.

The shameful defeat of BJP is credited to several factors – from disregarding people’s General Election mandate for development to discarding old dedicated party leaders at 11th hour of election to blatant arrogance. Maybe each of these has factored the defeat.

In the General Election in May 2014, BJP had won all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi but in just eight months, voters of Delhi seem to have revolted against the party even though it is ruling at the centre. Modi’s eight months in PM’s chair have not impressed the common people, rather antagonized the large chunk of the people who had voted him to power only for development and progress, not for hateful campaigns against minorities in the name of Love Jihad or Ghar Wapsi.

The Delhi Assembly election results have given the BJP and PM Modi an opportunity to introspect and respect the vibrant democracy of ours. People of the country elect and reject a political party or leader just by pressing a button of their choice. No one should see himself or herself invincible.
