New Delhi, 27 Jan 2015: While wrapping up his three-day speech today, US President Barack Obama stressed religious tolerance while addressing a gathering here at Siri Fort auditorium.

“India will succeed as long as it’s not splintered along religious lines,” President Obama was quoted as saying by NDTV while addressing 2,000 young people at a townhall type gathering.

President Obama referenced his own experience as a minority in America as he nudged India to fulfil its Constitutional pledge to uphold the “dignity of the individual.”

“There were moments in my life where I’ve been treated differently because of the colour of my skin…There have been times where my faith has at times been questioned by people who don’t know me, or they’ve said that I adhere to a different religion, as if that were somehow a bad thing.”

“Every person has the right to practise their religion and beliefs and not practice it if they choose so without any persecution. No society is immune from the darkest impulses of men and too often, religion has been used to tap into those instead of the light of God. The peace we seek in the world begins in human hearts,” President Obama said during his 40-minute speech.
