India Tomorrow
NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 14— In their biggest public demonstration in the last few decades, millions of Muslims came out on the streets after the Friday Namaz yesterday across the country to register their protest against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
Members of India’s largest religious minority protested in hundreds of cities and towns across the country. They were demanding withdrawal of the law which discriminates with Muslims on the basis of their religion. Passed by the Parliament and signed by the President of India Thursday night, the law will provide citizenship to illegal and undocumented refugees belonging to six non-Muslim communities – Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains and Parsis – from India’s three neighbouring countries, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
Muslims are terrified because after this law, the government is going to start updating of National Register of Citizens (NRC) which would require everyone to submit lineage documents to prove their citizenship. As six communities would enjoy safety cover of the new citizenship law, it will be Muslims who will be target of NRC process.
