New Delhi, Oct 19: “I want my child back. Those who beat my child should be arrested. They are roaming free. The one beaten up is missing while those who beat him are roaming free. None of them have been arrested. What is happening,” asks Fatima Nafees while weeping and talking to mediapersons near the protest demonstration of students at Jawaharlal Nehru University on Tuesday noon.

Her son Najeeb disappeared from his hostel room on Saturday morning (15 Oct), day after an alleged scuffle between him and some hostel students, who are said to be attached with ABVP, a students outfit affiliated to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Fatima, camping at the JNU campus along with her niece and another son for the past four days, is not satisfied with the efforts of the varsity administration to find out her missing son.

“If they are doing anything to recover my child it should be seen. Those who beat up my child their names have been out, yet none of them have been arrested. Why? I want my child. Please recover him. Please go and find out him. My son is very gentle and innocent. They have mercilessly beaten him,” says Fatima.

As per JNU students union, a scuffle took place at Najeeb’s room at Mahi Mandavi hostel on Friday. Najeeb was beaten and threatened by some students even in the presence of varsity officials.

“Some three students went to the room of Najeeb Ahmed, MSc – Biotechnology (first year), Room No 106, Mahi Hostel to campaign for hostel elections. At this time, there was an alleged scuffle which took place between Najeeb and the others. Hearing noise and commotion, when the residents of Mahi reached Room no 106, they witnessed three students assaulting Najeeb. At this juncture, the residents seeing a group of students hauling and coming towards Room No 106, for security concerns, locked Najeeb in his room. The G4S security personnel have upon reaching the hostel opened the door. Despite the presence of security personnel, some 10-15 students brutally attacked Najeeb. After the attack, the residents again locked Najeeb in the washroom and blocked the entrance, waiting for the Hostel warden to reach. As the senior warden, Dr Sushil Kumar reached the place, they started moving to the Warden’s office in the ground floor. Despite the presence of the senior warden and G4S security Najeeb was criminally intimidated and communally targeted by the same group of students on the way to the warden’s office. The JNUSU President and other hostel residents who had come to stop the attack were also assaulted by the same 10-15 group of students,” said JNUSU in a press statement on Monday (17 Oct).

Meanwhile, JNU administration has said it is making all efforts to find out Najeeb.

“The JNU administration, including the Vice‐Chancellor, met the family of Mr. Najeeb Ahmed at 6pm today (18‐10‐16) and explained to them all the steps taken by JNU administration in locating the missing student. JNU administration is deeply concerned about the whereabouts of Mr. Najeeb and has assured the family that all possible steps are being taken to trace him,” said JNU in a statement.

However, Najeeb’s mother said none from the varsity came to meet her on their own; she had to make hard efforts to meet them.

“None came from JNU administration to meet me. I myself tried hard and then met them. They said we are with you and we are trying to find him out. Where is my child if they are making efforts to find him? Police had also come and took our statement. Bring back my Najeeb,” says inconsolable Fatima.

“He was selected in AMU, JMI and Jamia Hamdard too but he opted for JNU. And now this university is not caring for its student who is missing for last 4 days after brutally being beaten up. I will not let him study here further. I just need my child back,” says Fatima.
