New Delhi, June 27— The central government on Thursday said it will extend deadline for comments and suggestions on the draft National Education Policy 2019 by one month. Earlier, the last date for the feedback was June 30.

Replying to a question in Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Human Resources Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that “it is an important issue and there has been extensive discussion over the policy for the last four years by the ministry” All India Radio quoted the minister as saying. The minister said the central government will extend the date to get more suggestions on it.

Earlier, TMC MP Derek O’Brien raised the issue claiming that state governments have not been consulted over the policy.

Several students groups had also demanded extension of the deadline for feedback. Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) had written a letter to the goverment seeking extension of the deadline and translation of the draft policy in some regional languages.

The Draft National Education Policy was made public by the government earlier this month.
