New Delhi, Aug 17: Two senior police officers of Gujarat, who were accused in some encounter killings and had spent years in jail, were on Thursday forced by the Supreme Court to quit. Their reappointment at plum posts even after retirement was challenged in the apex court.

After strong observations by the court on Thursday, the two officers reportedly informed it that they would resign today. On Wednesday, the apex court had asked the Gujarat government to take a call on it or the court would take a decision.

Police officers NK Amin and Tarun Barot were accused in some encounter killings including that of 19-year-old Ishrat Jahan. After retirement, they were reappointed as Superintendent of Police at Tapi district and Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Railways respectively.

Their reappointment on contract after retirement was challenged by Rahul Sharma, a former Indian Police Service officer of Gujarat.

In his petition, Sharma had alleged that Amin has faced trial in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Ishrat Jahan encounter killings and Barot was accused in the Sadiq Jaman and Ishrat Jahan killings.
