Delhi Women Commission Asks Police to Provide Details of Atrocities Committed on Women during Northeast Delhi Violence

NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 29— The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has issued notice to the Delhi Police seeking details of crimes committed against women and girls during the four-day long violence in the northeast Delhi. DCW issued the notice after its chairperson Swati Maliwal visited the violence-hit areas on Friday.

During her visit, Swati had met several women including a 9 month pregnant lady who was assaulted by a gang of rioters. She was rescued by her Hindu neighbour.

“The Delhi Commission for Women has taken suo-moto cognizance of the atrocities committed on women and girls during the riots that took place in North-East Delhi this week. The Commission yesterday met with a 9-month pregnant woman who was seriously assaulted and her home was lit on fire,” wrote DCW chairperson Swati in her notice to the Delhi Police on Friday.

“In light of the various reports regarding atrocities being committed on women and girls during the riots, the Delhi Commission for Women has instituted an inquiry into the matter. Therefore, you are hereby served this notice to provide the following information to the Commission for the purpose of the afore-mentioned inquiry in sealed cover,” reads the notice.

The DCW has sought:
— Details of all complaints/PCR calls/FIRs etc wherein crime against women is made out or the victim is a woman

— Details of victims of all complaints/PCR calls/FIRs etc. of sexual assault/molestation/harassment if any

— Details of deaths of women if any

— Details of FIRs registered till the receipt of this notice with regards to the riots

— Number of persons arrested till date with regards to the riots.

The DCW has asked the police to provide the above-mentioned information to the Commission by March 4.

“The riots that took place in Delhi in the last few days are extremely unfortunate and have destroyed lives and livelihoods of thousands of Delhiites. It is critical that the crimes committed in this period are thoroughly investigated and each perpetrator and supporter of these crimes is brought to justice,” said Swati Maliwal.

In the violence that erupted Sunday afternoon and continued for next three days, more than 40 people have been killed and over 200 injured. Hundreds of shops, houses, offices and vehicles have been set afire by rioters.
