New Delhi, 04 June 2014: At a time when the BJP-led Central Government has been very vocal on the rampant cases of rape in Uttar Pradesh, the Delhi Police, which comes directly under the Union Home Ministry, on Wednesday forcefully evicted the victims and the family of the Bhagana gang-rape case, who were on protest, from New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

On the night of 23 March 2014, 10 boys, allegedly belonging to the upper caste, abducted four Dalit minors from Bhagana village of Hissar district in Haryana, took them to Bhatinda and raped them continuously for three days.

Till now, the police arrested only three of the accused. The victims’ families alleged that the Haryana Police and state government has been soft towards the accused. As several weeks passed and no sufficient action taken, they then decided to protest at the residence of the Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hudda and then moved to Jantar Mantar.

They had been sitting at Jantar Mantar since 06 April 2014.

Several civil rights organisations condemned the police’s move to evict them from there. Activists and students, along with the victims, also protested at Parliament Street against the forceful eviction. Police detained and later released the protestors.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also condemned the forceful eviction of the victims.

“It is extremely shocking that instead of taking concrete steps to provide justice to these poor and helpless people, the Delhi administration and the city police behaved in such an inhuman manner, which defies logic and puts the national capital to shame,” the statement read.

“The AAP demands that the Lieutenant Governor and the union home ministry should take immediate steps to ensure the safety of these four girls and their families. Priority should be given to the rehabilitation of these families,” it further read.
