New Delhi, June 22: “This is not the India we had dreamt about at the time of Independence. We wanted to build an India where there will be no discrimination between Hindus and Muslims and all will live together,” said veteran journalist and former diplomat Kuldip Nayar while at an Iftar event hosted by Indian Muslims’ umbrella organization – All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat – at its headquarters here Thursday evening.

While expressing deep concern on incidents of intolerance and lynching, octogenarian journalist said: “Whatever is happening these days, we had not even imagined about them. This country is of all. It is not a Hindu Rashtra. Constitution rules the country and in Constitution, one man has one vote. It does not matter if your community is big or small.”

“We need such people who stand up and tell those in power that we cannot accept the way you are taking the country to. How many of us can do that,” he asked.

Earlier, Mushawarat president Navaid Hamid delivered a brief opening speech.
