New Delhi, June 12— Jamaat-e-Islami Hind on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the spate of rape and murder cases of minor girls in different parts of the country and urged the government, judiciary and law enforcement agencies to ensure that these growing incidents are immediately controlled by swift prosecution of the culprits. Jamaat also condemned attempts to view crimes from communal prism.

“News about the chilling murder of a toddler in Tappal township, Aligarh is highly distressing and painful. We condemn it unequivocally demand stern action against the culprits. In another incident, an 8-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Mandwa slum in Bhopal. There are reports of similar crimes from UP and Madhya Pradesh…the country needs to ponder seriously on how we can reverse this suicidal trend of rape and murder of innocent girl children,” said Jamaat.

It suggested curbs on objectification of women, ban on consumption of alcohol as a start to control the menace.

In the wake of the Aligarh incident of toddler’s murder, certain political parties and a section of media aggressively tried to give it a communal colour just because accused held were Muslim while there was no communal angle in the brutal murder of the innocent. The two-and-half-year-old child was murdered just because her father could not repay a loan of Rs 10,000 to the accused. Due to the communalization of the incident, the situation turned very tense in Aligarh so much so that the state government had to deploy hundreds of security personnel to maintain law and order. A Muslim family travelling in a car from Haryana to Aligarh was cornered by a saffron-clad mob but they were saved in time by their Hindu female friend who was with them in the car.

Commenting on the nefarious attempt to view the crimes from communal prism, Jamaat said: “The tendency to view incidents of crime through communal prism and to provoke violence and hatred against a particular community is highly deplorable and should be stopped herewith.”

To a question by the pressmen, Jamaat’s national president Syed Sadatullah Husaini said: “A section of media particularly some TV channels have been provoking sentiments on different issues and Jamaat will consider approaching the Press Council of India and other media regulatory bodies to check the trend.”

He also expressed anguish over recurrence of hate crimes and rise in lawlessness after the current Lok Sabha elections. He said Muslims should not fear alone, rather people of the entire country should be worried about the situation as it is going to harm the country.

“Muslims need not fear. They are not here on anyone’s mercy. They are equal citizens of the country. If there is indeed fear, then all people should fear as the situation is a threat to entire country, not just to Muslims,” said Husaini.

He was accompanied by Jamaat’s Vice President Mohammad Salim Engineer.
