New Delhi, July 18: Traders from different fields held a protest demonstration here on Tuesday against high rates of GST – Goods and Services Tax – on various items. Car dealers were protesting against 43% GST for old vehicles.

“GST is not for those who purchase new car in lieu of old car, but the dealers who purchase old cars for poor customers have to pay 43% GST. Even after taking full GST on new car, it is again being taken on old cars,” said All India Car Dealers Association which had organized the protest along with other traders.

It is said that the annual turnover of used car trade is around Rs 96,000 crore.

To express their anger and present themselves as prisoners of GST, some of the traders had chained themselves from head to toe.

Jewellers were also participating in the protest against double taxes on gold.

They said the government has imposed 3% GST on gold besides 10% custom duty, so in all there is 13% tax on gold. Why are these two taxes together on gold, they asked.

In order to bring uniformity in taxes for goods and services across the country, the central government implemented GST from 1st of July in the entire country.
