Patna, 09 Nov 2015: The new Bihar Assembly will have 24 Muslim members, that is 9.88% – the highest percentage of Muslim representation in the last 25 years. But what is not less significant is the fact that more than half of the Muslim winners have reached the new Assembly after directly defeating candidates of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Some 20 of the 24 Muslim winners defeated the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance candidates – 13 of the losers were from BJP alone while the rest seven from its allies (4 from RLSP, 2 from LJP and 1 from the newly formed HAM of Jitan Ram Manjhi).
Renowned among the Muslim winners are Abdul Bari Siddiqui of RJD who defeated Mishri Lal Yadav of BJP in Alinagar seat in Darbhanga district and Shakil Ahmed Khan of Congress who defeated Chander Bhushan Thakur of BJP in Kadwa seat in Araria district.
