NEW DELHI, AUGUST 5—When Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his speech after Bhoomi Pujan for the grand Ram Temple on the same site where Babri Masjid once stood, said that India was writing a new history, many twitter users said that Babri Masjid was always a Masjid and will always remain a mosque.

All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) that fought the Babri Masjid case in the Supreme Court but lost it, in a statement issued on August 4, said, “Babri Masjid was a mosque, is a mosque and will always remain a mosque. Its usurpation cannot change the reality”.

Reiterating its original stand, the board said, “When a mosque is established, it will continue to remain a mosque till the end of the world as per Islamic jurisprudence. Hence, Babri Masjid was a mosque in the past, it is a mosque even now and will, In Sha Allah, remain a mosque in future as well. Installation of idols in the mosque, worship of the idols inside the mosque or banning the performance of ‘namaaz’ or ‘salat’ for a prolonged period, will not change the status of the mosque”.

AIMPLB general secretary Maulana Mohammed Wali Rahmani, in a press release, said that it was always board’s stand that the Babri Masjid was not built after demolition of a temple or a Hindu place of worship. He said that the Supreme Court in its verdict in November 2019 had also approved the board’s stand. The Supreme Court, according to Maulana Rahmani, also accepted that ‘namaz’ in the Babri mosque was held till the night of December 22, 1949. The apex court also admitted that installation of idols inside the mosque in the night of December 22, 1949 was illegal and unconstitutional and demolition of the mosque on December 6, 1992, was an illegal and criminal act. Maulana Rahmani said that it is unfortunate that despite clear evidences in favour of the mosque, the Supreme Court handed over the site of the Babri Masjid to those who had committed the crime of illegal installation of idols inside the mosque and then demolished it too.

“Since it was the verdict of the highest court of the land, we had no option than to accept it. But we can certainly say that it was an arbitrary and unjust decision under the influence of majoritarianism”, said Maulana Rahmani in his media statement.

Many twitter users, who ran hashtags #BabriZindaHai and #ReturnBabrilandtoMuslims, said that August 5 is a Black Day for the Muslims.

There are others who said that they would tell their future generations to take back the mosque and give Azaan again from the same place.

Ali Sohrab, who tweets with the name of ‘Kakavani’ said, “Secularism will be buried under the Ram Temple # BabriZindaHai”.

One Nabiya Khan tweeted, “You built your #RamMandir on our dead bodies. Nothing will wash off the stains of blood from your hands. The law of the land should be ashamed for failing Muslims of this country. Posterity will name you as hateful fascist bigots”.
