New Delhi, Dec 12: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has welcomed the results of the assembly elections in five states and termed them as “a setback to communal politics.” BJP lost three states – Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh – where it was in power and was completely rejected by people in the other two – Telangana and Mizoram.

Welcoming the results of the assembly elections, Jamaat’s Secretary General Muhammad Salim Engineer said, “they are a setback to communal politics. The ruling party tried its level best to polarize the electorate using communal issues but they were flatly rejected by the people of this country who are more interested in solving their day to day problems of poverty, unemployment, education and health.”

He expressed hope that BJP will heed to people’s mandate.

“We hope that the ruling party pays heed to the people’s mandate and desists from seeking electoral benefits by demonizing minorities and suppressing the oppressed and marginalized sections of society,” said Jamaat leader and asked Opposition parties to get united to take on communal forces.

“The opposition must now unite to fight the fascist and communal forces and set an example of peace, progress and communal harmony in the states where they have come to power. The people of India must continue to reject those who peddle hate and vote astutely in the parliamentary elections next year. The nation cannot afford to give another chance to ineptitude and fascist tendencies”, said Salim Engineer.

Congress has dethroned BJP in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh – the saffron party has been in power in the last two states for over 15 years. On the other hand, regional parties – TRS and Mizo National Front – got massive victory in Telangana and Mizoram respectively.
