Advocate Shahid Azmi was remembered on his 8th death anniversary

New Delhi, Feb 12: Marking the death anniversary of Advocate Shahid Azmi, various programs was organized by human rights activists and lawyers across the country. On this occasion they remembered Shahid Azmi and his sacrifices and pledged to defend human rights in the country.

Shahid Azmi was a human rights lawyer who was martyred on 11th February 2010 in his office at Taximan Colony in Mumbai’s Kurla locality. Shahid, during his teenage was arrested by security agencies and spent seven years in Tihar Jail. From the jail itself, hepursued a degree in law and after his release he started practicing as a lawyer.

Rihai Manch organized a conference in Lucknow where social activists from all across Uttar Pradesh gathered and shared their views on various ongoing issues.

An important program was organized in Delhi by human right organization ANHAD. Here, Mohammad Amir Khan was the speaker. Amir was charged with 18 terror cases in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and after 14 years of confinement, finally he was acquitted by the court in January 2012. Amir had spent two years with Shahid Azmi in Delhi’s Tihar Jail. Amir shared his memory with Shahid during Tihar days.

In Delhi, a talk was also organized by a forum named Karvaan. In this program, activist-turned journalist Mahtab Alam spoke about the life of Shahid Azmi in detail and the film Shahid was also screened there. A similar program was organized by human rights body Minority Rights Watch (MRW) in the Kollam city of Kerala where Abdul Majeed Nadvi spoke about the life and struggle of Shahid Azmi.
