30 IAF aircraft crashed in 3 years

New Delhi, 25 Nov 2014: The Indian Air Force has lost 30 aircraft in crashes since 2011 and in terms of value, the loss is estimated at Rs. 1161.50 crore, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said told Rajya Sabha today.

According to the minister, the year 2011-12 was worst as 13 aircraft of IAF crashed in the year. In the next two years, 12 aircraft crashed. In the current 2014-15 (till 19 Nov), 5 aircraft have crashed.

The crashed aircraft were from various designs and types including Mirage, Jaguar and MiG.

Apart from the above accidents, two Mi-17 helicopters of IAF were destroyed during relief operations, one during 2011-12 and another during 2013-14.

IAF aircraft accidents during such operations in aid to civil agencies are not included in the statistics maintained for aircraft accidents.

Every IAF aircraft accident/incident is thoroughly investigated by Court of Inquiry to ascertain the cause of accident and the recommendations of the completed Court of Inquiry are implemented. Main reasons for these accidents were Human Error and Technical Defect,” said Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.
